We’ve put together the perfect Hocking Hills itinerary for your fall visit! This time of year, the region is extraordinarily beautiful with the changing colors and dropping temperatures. It’s the best time to hike or even take a scenic drive.
FRIDAY:
12pm - leave work early so you can check-in at 4pm! (If you haven’t ordered a s’morecuterie tray, now is the time - see the check-in instructions for details.)
4pm - check-in, drop your items at the cabin and breathe in the fresh air. You’ve arrived and are ready to relax!
5pm - head to Manchester Hills Winery and Vineyard for a glass (or bottle) of locally grown and made wine and see their menu for light food options.
Head back to the cabin when you’ve fully unwound (responsibly!) and cuddle up to enjoy a movie before slipping into bed with the softest bamboo sheets.
SATURDAY:
Sleep in! Enjoy a cup of coffee made with locally roasted beans - maybe even on the deck? Have a light breakfast so you can enjoy a day of hiking!
10am - take a short walk on the property trails - you may see deer, hear the neighbor’s rooster, and enjoy some foliage on-site.
11am - Old Man’s Cave is a must-visit site. Plan to spend a good amount of time here! There’s the Upper Falls - a beautiful waterfall that is most often showcased in photos of Hocking Hills, the Devil’s Bathtub - an interesting water basin fed by a small waterfall that creates the illusion of a deep pool, and uncover the history of Old Man’s cave (hint: it was once actually an old man’s home!)
1:30pm - Have a late lunch at the Rock House restaurant, reservations are not required but are highly recommended. The atmosphere is described as “rustic elegance” and the dining is casual.
3pm - visit the Rock House if you have time! The only real cave in Hocking Hills, it has a colorful history and and makes for fascinating exploration.
5pm - return back to the cabin. You should probably get takeout or grill something easy! Your s’morecuterie tray will come in handy this evening as you’ll want to build a fire and enjoy s’mores.
SUNDAY:
After sleeping in, pack up your belongings and make yourself an extra cup of coffee to take on a lovely car ride.
11am - check out and take a scenic drive, one that Car & Driver magazine said, “maybe the best [route] in the world, this side of the Nurburgring.” Yes, you read that right. Car & Driver magazine rated the drive on State Route 374 to State Route 56 to State Route 664 as the best in the Midwest and maybe in the world! Don’t miss it, especially if you’re visiting in the fall (their visit was in the spring, so they didn’t factor in the foliage!)
A couple more options to note:
If you’re a runner, don’t miss the Hocking Hills Trail Run on September 21.
On October 12, the Old Man’s Cave Visitor Center will be having a 6 mile hike called Grandma Gatewood’s Fall Colors Hike. Don’t let the name fool you - it is described as “strenuous” but it sounds worth it to us!
TIP: We recommend booking 3+ nights to get the most out of your stay. Want to discover other sites and activities to add to your fall getaway? Be sure to check out our other blogs to add to your intinerary.
